I went to the Redskins game versus the Cleveland Browns this weekend. The tailgate was excellent and although the game was low scoring, the game was exciting. The game was decided on virtually the final play when Phil Dawson missed a 54 yard field goal, so 95,000 people went home happy.
There was one negative that I still am somewhat confused about. It is the second quarter and I have been sitting for most of the game. Cleveland is around the 40 yard line or so and the Redskins had the Brown in a 3rd and 8 situation. Right before the play, several people around me stand up, and I, of course, stand up to cheer for the defense, possibly cause a false start, etc. I am huge Redskin fan so I am pretty intense. Before the play starts, I get a tap on my shoulder and the guy behind me tells me he can't see. Is he short? No! I am 5'7" on a good day. He wants to be able to sit in his seat and still see the game.
I understand that he paid just as much for his ticket as I did. Maybe the visual angered me more than anything. The couple was sitting there very comfortably under a huge blanket, sipping on hot chocolate like they are sitting on the National Mall watching fireworks. So, here is the question I need answered?
Are either of us more in the right than the other? Should a Man Law be created to handle situations like this?
We had the same thing happen to us in the Ram's game. My theory is it's from upper deck seats who are sneaking down and taking empty seats, because the IQ of the fans as a whole definitely went down noticably (more noise when the offense was on the field, etc) late in the third quarter. I've also noticed a disparity in behavior between club seats and lower level (lower level stands a LOT more and tends to be a lot more friendly) so I'm guessing it's a sort of mini-culture shock that people receive when they go to a section they're not used to.
However, you shouldn't have to sit down. I say this even though my wife has a back problem and had trouble standing and sitting a lot. You can always look at the screen if you have to. And most of the time if you're standing up it's because the guy in front of you is also standing up so you don't have very much choice. Don't go to the games if you don't like standing once in a while. That's my vote.
