I've got lots of predictions for everyone tonight. First, I'll quickly go through my picks on the MLB playoffs and finish with some NHL picks. As always, post your thoughts and/or predictions in the comments section.
MLB Playoffs
American League - Red Sox over Angels in 4. Yankees over Twins in 4. Yankees over Red Sox in 7.
National League - Cardinals over Dodgers in 3. Phillies over Rockies in 5. Phillies over Cardinals in 6.
World Series - Yankees over Phillies in 6.
I would love to take the Red Sox or Phillies to win the World Series, but I just think the Yankees are too strong. This really does seem to be their year, so I've got to go with them.
NHL season
Eastern Conference
1. Washington Capitals - Race for No. 1 overall should be between the Caps and Penguins.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins - Should be in for another solid season.
3. Boston Bruins - I expect a dropoff from last season, but they should still be a strong team.
4. Philadelphia Flyers - The biggest question is in goal. If Ray Emery is strong, the team will cruise.
5. Buffalo Sabres - I'm very high on my Sabres this year. They will surprise people.
6. New York Rangers - Rangers just can't seem to break into the top half of the conference.
7. Carolina Hurricanes - Year in and year out, this fiesty team is always right there.
8. New Jersey Devils - This race will be tight, but I give the edge to an experienced Devils squad.
9. Montreal Canadiens - They made a lot of moves this offseason. Will it matter?
10. Florida Panthers - I think they are close, but still a player or two away.
11. Tampa Bay Lightning - Lots of good young parts. Now, getting them to mesh.
12. Ottawa Senators - Might surprise, but my money is on a tough season.
13. Atlanta Thrashers - Mr. Kovalchuk might be on the way out, but this team is improving.
14. Toronto Maple Leafs - Fair to call them a rebuilding team? I would say so.
15. New York Islanders - They are rough around the edges, but they are also headed in the right direction.
Western Conference
1. San Jose Sharks - Every year they burn me, but every year I predict them to do very well. We'll see.
2. Chicago Blackhawks - Detroit finally has a threat in the Central. Chicago is legit.
3. Calgary Flames - A definite Stanley Cup contender. Bouwmeester's addition was key.
4. Detroit Red Wings - Detroit will be a major playoff contender, as they are every year.
5. Anaheim Ducks - Too high? Possibly, but I like what they have.
6. St. Louis Blues - Here's another nice, young team. I like them too.
7. Vancouver Canucks - Now here's a team I'm not completely sold on. Not enough offense.
8. Los Angeles Kings - The Kings?? Have I lost it? Well, I hope not at least. Kings are my surprise team.
9. Columbus Blue Jackets - The Blue Jackets could easily make the playoffs. It's a toss up.
10. Minnesota Wild - Most seem to be down on them. I'm not.
11. Dallas Stars - Not sure what to think of this team. They are in transition.
12. Colorado Avalanche - I think they will surprise a bit this year. Not playoff-material, but growing.
13. Nashville Predators - There's just not much to like here. They will struggle.
14. Edmonton Oilers - Quick, name five Oilers. ...exactly.
15. Phoenix Coyotes - This team is pretty much in disarray. Should be a long year.
I'm looking at the Capitals, Penguins, Sharks and Blackhawks as my early Cup favorites, though Detroit and Boston should also be there. Calgary is a possibility too. For dark horses, like I said, I love my Sabres. In the East I also like the Rangers and Devils. Out West, my big underdog pick is the Kings. I can see them developing in a similar fashion to the Blackhawks.
For a very early Stanley Cup prediction, however, I will go with the Sharks over the Capitals. But ask me again in a few months.
