New season, new Jimmy Claussen. And I like what I see.
Notre Dame did not look like a Top 25 team at all against San Diego State. They turned the ball over. They gave up a lot of yards passing. But, there were many things I saw that are promising.
Claussen looked very good. His arm looks much stronger than it was last year and his passes were very accurate. It helped that the offensive line played very well and kept him clean which is another positive. But his passes were right on the money. His two interceptions were not his fault (in my opinion) and he is developing a good rapport with Golden Tate. I see a different offense from last year, but there are some concerns. #1 is that the offensive line did not open any holes for the running backs.
I like the new defensive scheme as well. This could be the difference in the season (along with the schedule being much easier). They blitzed about 80% of the time and they were able to get to the quarterback a lot. I saw about 10 more tipped passes today than I did all last year.
By no means do I think Notre Dame is a Top 25 team, they may be later in the year. But, at least they are as embarrassing as they were last year.
